Dear BAMf Podcast: Episode 57 with Patrick McCarthy

The Power of Media Relations for Venture Capital Funds

Dear BAMf // Episode 57: Patrick McCarthy of Waybridge gives advice on how to entice media.

In this episode of the Dear BAMf podcast, we speak with Patrick McCarthy, owner of Waybridge. Patrick's specializes in advertising technology, product management, strategy, B2B marketing, product marketing, and partnerships. In this episode, Patrick answers needling marketing and PR questions from our listeners, including this one about CEOs talking to the media.

Dear BAMf,

Our CEO is interested in commenting on a trending topic that several other CEOs in the space have already commented on. How can we differentiate our viewpoint insight to entice media to want to speak with us when our viewpoints are similar and not polar opposite to the commentary already shared by others? Do we leverage data? What other assets can we provide to make us stand out?

Listen now to hear how Patrick advises this writer to move forward.

Dear BAMf: Episode 57

Episode 57 highlights:

  • (01:30) What is Waybridge?

Waybridge digitally transforms the global supply chain industry as Patrick explains here, "We are a startup whose mission is to bridge the gaps in the global supply chain, making it more efficient, resilient, and sustainable." Waybridge improves efficiency with companies that work in trade, metal, and agriculture.

  • (03:00) What are you most proud of accomplishing in the last 12 months?
Waybridge recently raised $30 million in series B funding, which was a huge win and reason to celebrate. This is not the only source of pride from Patrick's perspective. For Patrick, there is nothing better than hearing feedback from customers about their new technology platform. Patrick says, "We've got some customers live and you can see our team's faces light up when you hear a customer using Waybridge for the first time and saying, oh my gosh, this is going to make my job, my life, my day so much better." Although Patrick is new to the supply chain industry he is also proud of his ability to catch up to speed and learn the market
  • (06:20) Do you have a favorite way to tell a story?

Patrick enjoys customer stories, he finds them trustworthy and less likely to use marketing lingo. He says, "I am chomping at the bit to get some of Waybridge's customers out there telling the story of how our technology has made their world better." This approach reminds your audience and customers that the company is actively listening and cares what they think.

  • (08:00) What assets can a CEO provide to media to make them stand out?
Patrick doubles down on the importance of customer stories. He suggests having your CEO walk through positive and unique customer experiences. Patrick says, "Having a story opposed to a viewpoint is really important." Sharing data makes for a more trustworthy story, so feel free to incorporate unique insights. Use a combination of data, customer stories and company updates to keep media enticed.
